Children’s Building Team Proposal

The final presentation after design and schematics by the architects and builders for the complete project is $8,300,000.

With our leftover fire insurance funds and the funds raised through the “Next Step” capital campaign we have approximately $4,750,000.

The building committee was charged to use the money we have pledged and received to replace the square footage lost in the fire and to allow for future growth and expansion through phasing.

The building committee was tasked with developing a strategic plan for “Phasing” all the new building and renovations identified in the original project.  The first priority is to use the money we have pledged and received to replace the square footage lost in the fire and to allow for future growth and expansion.

The committee decided to prioritize the New Children’s Building, new kitchen, renovation and expansion of the gym projects for Phase 1.  Phase 2 projects will include the gathering space ($1,100,000) and renovation of the old children’s space ($800,000).  This would save us around $2,000,000.

We needed to save an additional $1,600,000 dollars to remain within our revised budget.

With strategic revisions (decreasing the children’s area by 2,500 sq. feet, which is only 8.5% of the original 29,000 sq ft) we were able to save approximately $660,000.

We also plan to remodel part of the gym using a mix of paid laborers and volunteers saving $150,000.

The next most significant cost savings was the equipment for the expanded playground, Our plan is to use some of our existing equipment and then add standard large play equipment that you might see at chick-fil-a or McDonald’s.  Instead of purchasing custom equipment we were able to save $450,000.

The last cost savings is to use most of our existing appliances in the kitchen expansion, saving us an additional $250,000.

Phase 1 includes a furniture allowance of $170,000 in the revised budget.

The total project for “Phase 1” is now $5,000,000, with a 5% contingency.  If we do not spend our 5% “buffer” we are within budget, $4,750,000.

After Phase 1 is complete New Covenant church will have added nearly 30,000 feet of additional space with a new children’s building, a new kitchen, a new gathering café, and an expansion of our current gym.  The capacity of our children’s program will have nearly doubled from 190 to 360 children.  Our new children’s facility will be safe, secure, up to date, and capable of meeting the expanded needs of our growing congregation. We will now have 10 available adult classrooms for Sunday school and small groups after completion of the new children’s area.  Our gym expansion will allow for a regulation length basketball court so we are able to host sports events to highlight our commitment to hospitality and community.

Dear New Covenant Family,

The church body has made a bold decision.

After lengthy discussions, town hall meetings, research and a multitude of prayers, individual members of New Covenant United Methodist Church voted to approve the proposed plans for the new Children’s Building and surroundings.

The vote was taken by a written ballot at the open Church Conference held last Sunday, August 28th. The conference was presided over by Dan Pulver, North Oklahoma City UMC District Superintendent.

After stirring testimonies by members Nancy Decker, Joe Broome and Travis Brown, Dan Pulver opened the floor for a question and answer period. A vote was subsequently taken and the plan was adopted with an 85% majority approving and 15% disapproving. A total of 222 yes votes were cast and a total of 39 no votes were cast by those in attendance.

The church will move forward with the Next Step Capital Campaign with the intent on raising funds to enable construction of the facilities.
